The Wreck of Cruiser Murmansk – A Soviet Relic off Norway's Coast
When it comes to shipwrecks, most of the interesting warships fade away after the 1940s. A few exceptions aside, of course, like General Belgrano. As we progress into the 21st Century, that won't change.
For example, barring something going really wrong with a museum ship, we're past the point of big guns on shipwrecks. With one, notable, exception. Murmansk.
This Soviet cruiser was the last all-gun cruiser to be wrecked, in the mid-1990s. Her wreck would sit in place, off Norway, for twenty years.
Only scrapped in 2012, so quite recently, in the grand scheme of things.

Life in the far north of Russia beyond the Arctic circle | Murmansk & Kola Peninsula
This video is about the far north of Russia - Kola Peninsula located beyond the Arctic Circle. You will see here the best places of peninsula, including the city of Murmansk, and will learn more about the reality of living here 🥶
This trip was one of the most memorable ones in my life. I visited the region I wanted to see for a long time - Kola Peninsula! Since it’s located beyond the Arctic circle, there was a polar night there. What means the sun doesn’t appear during a certain period of time in winter. What can I say?! Interesting experience!
Unfortunately due to the heavy snowfall, the road to the most famous place, Teriberka, was closed. So we went to the South of peninsula - Kirovsk.
In this part of Kola peninsula we experienced so many interesting activities such as snowboarding...

Murmansk: What’s Left After Soviet Union? | Poverty, Desolation and Breaking Down Houses
Once famous as a big northern port, today Murmansk is the embodiment of the depressing life in Russia. It neighbours Norway but looks the exact opposite. It has amazing historical heritage but nothing is being done to preserve it. What happened? And where does the money of the Russian citizens go? Will the resettlement scheme apply to those living in breaking down houses or are they forever-stuck in poverty? Join me to find out!

The Polar Night in MURMANSK - THE BIGGEST CITY IN ARCTIC CIRCLE
This is how I experienced polar night in Murmansk, the biggest city in Arctic Circle. It is located in the north-west of Russia and borders with Finland.
Just imagine sun not rising for 40 days..it's not the complete darkness, but a few hours of magic colours in the sky which seem like sunset.
Now, Murmansk is one of the fastest shrinking cities in Russia! Its population was around half a million people at the times of the Soviet Union, and according to the 2010 census less than 300,000 people still lived there
What is it like to live at the edge of the world?
With severe nature around.
Let's find out!

Murmansk, the Arctic capital
At a latitude of roughly 65.5 lies the Arctic circle. Few major human settlements exist within its borders. The largest of these settlements is Murmansk and as its name suggests it is a city on the edge of the world.
It lies 2 degrees above the Arctic circle and is 108 kilometers from the Norwegian Border and 182 from the Finnish. The closest major Russian city is St Petersburg roughly 900km away.
The city experiences Polar nights for roughly 40 days at a time. This means that between early December and mid January the sun does not rise. The opposite starts from the middle of May till the end of August during which the sun does not set.
For an Arctic city the climate is relatively mild with peak summer temperatures averaging 12.9c in July and peak winter cold in February at -10.7c on average.
This is largely a benefit of the warm North Atlantic current
This means that Murmansk is the only Russian port with unrestricted and easy year round access to the North
Atlantic Ocean.
As a result, the port is the 4th largest in the country and is one of the main stops along the Arctic's Northeast Passage connecting Asia and Europe making Murmansk one of the most strategically important assets for Russia.
In the early stages of WW1 Russia had only two harbours in its Northwest, the one in St Petersburg and Anhargelsk. With the first port blockaded and the other freezing over during winter another port was necessary.

Despite Murmansk not being the most bustling city, we always try to capture as much of the local atmosphere as possible. Although the main concentration of people can be found in shopping centers rather than on the streets, Alexey will guide you through the lovely city center`s streets. Furthermore, the weather has already started to change in Murmansk, with the onset of colder temperatures and even a hint of rain in the evening. However, this provides a unique perspective on the city, as it highlights the cozy and atmospheric charm of Murmansk.
Do you know that Murmanks is the northernmost millionaire city in the world? Located on the shores of the Barents Sea near Kola Bay, modern Murmansk began its history in 1916 and is still considered quite an important port city in the country. But there are a few things that make it unique. The polar night reigns here from the beginning of December to mid-January, and the polar day - from the end of May to the end of July. And locals paint buildings and stones in different bright colors to somehow dilute the dullness of an eight-month winter.
Another interesting fact: there is only one high-rise building in Murmansk - the 18-story “Arktika” hotel, which is also the ONLY hotel in the city.

In this part of Kola peninsula we experienced so many interesting activities such as snowboarding, snowmobiling, meeting reindeers, dog sledding and more!
And the most bright memory was seeing the northern light for the first time in my life. Dream came true ♥️
